Champagne in luxury hotels, a personal chauffeur, red-carpet appearances, and millions of fans – Bollywood seems to embody glamour at its finest. But what is life really like for an actor in the world's largest film industry? And who keeps this vast dream factory running behind the scenes? Y-Kollektiv reporter Samuel Häde travels to Mumbai to follow his best friend, Anant Joshi, who has risen to become a successful Bollywood actor since they first met more than ten years ago. Samuel joins him at an exclusive Netflix event, goes behind the scenes of a major film production, and experiences firsthand the pressure that lies beneath the seemingly glamorous lifestyle. In Bollywood, talent alone is rarely enough – success also depends on luck, perseverance, and constantly staying in the spotlight. At the same time, the documentary follows German actress Lisa-Marie Spiegel, who has bet everything on Bollywood. She has been living in Mumbai for years, moving from one audition to the next while hoping for her big break. Through auditions, rejections, and fierce competition, it becomes clear just how difficult the road to success really is. The Y-Kollektiv documentary My Best Friend Is a Bollywood Star takes viewers to film sets, premieres, and into the world of India's biggest movie stars. At the same time, it shines a light on the people working behind the scenes, without whom the dream factory could not exist – people whose daily lives often bear little resemblance to the glittering image of the film industry.
